Illinois Whistleblower Defense Attorney
The False Claims Act and the Illinois Whistleblower Reward and Protection Act
The Whistleblower Reward and Protection Act (WRPA), 740 ILCS 175/1, et seq., is based on the federal False Claims Act (FCA), 31 U.S.C. §3729, et seq. Both of these statutes authorize a private person, the whistleblower, to sue, on behalf of the government, a company or persons attempting to defraud the state or federal governments. These whistleblowers may then be eligible for an award. These suits brought by whistleblowers, or relators, are known as "qui tams." "Qui tam" is short for "qui tam pro domino rege quam pro se ipso in hac parte sequitur," which means "who pursues this action on our Lord the King's behalf as well as his own."
